About the Artwork
This artwork was originally created as a collaboration between Molly Maine and Yu Yamagishi, a Japanese Lacquer Artist whose home was destoyed in the Noto earthquake in Japan. The Banksia flower was chosen as a symbol of resilience, a plant that thrives in harsh conditions and regenerates after fire and flood. It represents Noto’s strength and rebuilding after the earthquake and tsunami. Molly illustrated the design by hand, and Yamagishi-san interpreted her work, carving it onto the natsume (a traditional Japanese tea container) in gold, using the Chinkin technique, a technique for painting on lacquer, using a chisel to carve a pattern on the surface. Urushi lacquer is rubbed into the concave area created after carving, and then gold powder is filled in (sunk) to create the pattern.
